Sunday was a 22-year-old Tanzanian man when, in 2014, he was diagnosed with an ameloblastoma, large tumor in his jaw. It was causing facial deformity and intense pain. The tumor was life-threatening as it would continue growing over time and, if left untreated, would cause a deadly fracture of his jaw. Following his diagnosis OWOS coordinated a fundraising campaign to take Sunday to Spain to have the tumor removed. On November 7th 2014 a team of 5 oral surgeons at San Francisco de Assis Hospital in Madrid lead by Dr. Miguel Burgueño removed the tumor during an 11 hour surgery and rebuilt Sunday’s lower jaw with bone from his fibula. Sunday is now a happy and good looking young man who can look ahead with a smile. OWOS will always be deeply grateful towards Dr. Miguel Burgueño, Dr Fernando Garcia Marin, Dr Javier Arias, Dr Laura Garcia Arana, Dr Maria Jose Moran Soto, and the Director of San Francisco de Asis for making this possible.
The 11 hour surgery was a success and Sunday was flown back to Tanzania in early December 2014 where he continues to live a normal life. OWOS would like to extend its deepest gratitude to those who donated and helped make Sunday’s surgery possible.
We would also especially like to thank Dr. Miguel Burgueño, Dr. Fernando Garcia Marín, Dra. Maria José Moran to Dr. Laura García, to Dr. Javier Arias and the anesthesiologists and the entire team at San Francisco de Asís Hospital in Madrid. A special thanks also to Alipio Gutierrez, Nuria Ramirez de Castro, and Sandra Mir.
